The National Disability Insurance Scheme represents an Australian Government initiative providing customized plans and financial support for individuals with disabilities. As of 2021-22, the program allocated approximately $30 billion, catering to over 550,000 participants.
Historically, state governments managed disability accommodation through grant-based funding arrangements. This approach has shifted toward market-based systems where individuals manage their own funding via personalized NDIS plans.Housing development remains a critical NDIS priority, particularly for young people in aged care facilities and adults with aging parents. The scheme reports that more than 6,200 young people are living in aged care, with 2,000 young people entering aged care annually, and in certain regions, young people represent over 20% of all aged care occupants.
The NDIS allocates an annual budget of $700 million for Specialized Disability Accommodation (SDA) payments. This housing funding targets individuals under 65 with severe disability support requirements, representing approximately 6% of NDIS participants, or approximately 28,000 people.
