# Is SDA funding here to stay?

The Special Disability Accommodation (SDA) program, which is part of Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), appears positioned for long-term continuation. Several factors support this outlook.

## Financial Sustainability

The NDIS currently supports approximately 600,000 participants with annual expenditure reaching $35 billion. Projections indicate spending could reach $97 billion by 2032-33 based on current growth patterns of around 14 percent yearly.

## Government Commitment

Established in 2016, the SDA program has received consistent backing from the Australian government, which allocated \$700 million per year as of the 2021-2022 financial year. This reflects the program's importance within the disability support framework.

## Growing Demand

Demand for SDA properties is expected to increase as the NDIS expands nationally and eligibility grows. This anticipated expansion suggests the program will remain a core component of the NDIS for the foreseeable future.

## Important Caveats

While SDA funding appeared secure as of September 2021, government programs remain subject to political decisions, budgetary priorities, and policy shifts. The NDIS underwent review as of June 2023, reflecting ongoing evaluation efforts.
